We have rented not one, but TWO twelve-person hot tubs that will be parked outside on our back yard. Complete with privacy fencing, lighting, and a board walk all around and into the venue! Get changed in the washroom, and come on out.
- You MUST shower every time you get into the tub
- No Beverages permitted
- Limit to 30m in tub for safety
Downstairs in the soon-to-be powder room, we’ll have a photo booth area setup! A photographer will be on-site from 9-10pm on Friday and on Saturday evenings; outside of those times, it will be open all weekend long for selfies and bring-your-own camera shots.
Looking for some fresh air? We’ll have an outdoor floor setup over the weekend pending weather!
Newly arrived to Sugar Swing is 5 tons of AC cooling! We’ll see if it holds up to our packed house, but it’ll definitely take the edge off.
Jedi Jack n Jill
A Solstice dance contest favourite. Blind-folds, crazy music, and silly criteria! Sign up on Friday with Turlough. Or just enter at the late-night!
Bad Music Set
Or more accurately, not-the most-kosher Lindy Hop music. We’ll be playing your favourite “so bad it’s good” music from Brian Setzer’s “In The Mood” to Raffi’s “Bananaphone” to Glenn Miller’s “American Patrol”. Luckily it won’t actually last very long, but we’ll pull in some real winners before the fun stops! Credits to Mark Kihara and Herrang Dance Camp.
Whyte Ave Crawl
Edmonton’s got some cool spots to check out, especially on Whyte Ave! What better way to meet new people from various places than with our staple “Whyte Ave Crawl”. Equipped with maps, group facilitators, and plans, our host Tyrel will direct your small group of 8-10 people to the best spots near our lovely ballroom. 90-180 minutes.
Jazz Music Panel
Brad Shigeta, Jon-Erik Kellso, and Conal Fowkes
Complete with world-class musicians! No, for serious, Summer Solstice Swing Dance Festival is peanuts compared to the festivals, movies, and gigs that these guys are used to. We are very, very, very, x1000 lucky to have them in Edmonton for our dance festival! In any case, more about the panel. It is 90 minutes long, which will start with an introductory period followed by a bit of an interview and panel discussion. This will then lead into audience questions. The topic is “How we make music” and it is aimed at dancers and jazz music lovers. If you are one of those, you should definitely attend!
Outdoor dance floor, live jazz music, barbequed food, lovely summer, and the best deejays in the Prairies! This is our annual Jazz BBQ of Solstice complete with a full meal and dessert. It’s being hosted on our front lawn, complete with privacy fencing.
Vintage Swim Suit Contest
This contest is ALL about sass! You’ve obviously brought your swim suit because of the TWO hot tubs, so why not? Strut your stuff and show off your vintage swim suit! Heck, maybe you’ll win, but it’s not about that. It’s silly, it’s exciting, it’s fun!
Relax and rejuvinate your muscles on Sunday “morning” at Summer Solstice with a Yoga class with Vancouver’s Claudia Nobauer! “Morning” will actually be noon on Sunday. All levels welcome, no yoga experience required. Just try not to wear jeans.
Our annual Cabaret is a great opportunity to show us your talents and what you’ve been working on. Inspired by Herrang’s cabaret, “It doesn’t have to be good… just short” motto, we are looking for acts that are entertaining, silly, or just plain fun. Non-lindy acts are very welcome, so expect to see a bit of everything — musical numbers, juggling, a sketch, improv, feats of strength, etc.
Sure we’ll have live music. But what about the band breaks? Introducing… Professor Smack, ie, Joel Schwarz! Not only is he an accomplished vernacular jazz dancer and dance historian of 15+ years, he is a professional video editor. Joel is renowned for his extensive knowledge of jazz history and amazing collection of vintage video clips.
Turlough and Matty are hosting the most epic after party, and there will be brews made available! Wind down from the weekend with a good drink, amazing new friends. Catch up with your old friends and have a great time.
